entrance to northgate brewery 1969

A view of the entrance to the brewery from Northgate Street. The building on the left was a fire station but survives today as a French restaurant. Those on the right, in common with the rest of the brewery, have vanished and replaced by a modern office block. Below are some views of the brewery, taken just before its demolition in 1969..

aerial view of brewery setting 1960s

A late 1960s view from the top of the recently-demolished Commerce House showing the brewery just before it was demolished. King Street is in the foreground and Northgate Street to the right. The Bluecoat is clearly visible beyound the brewery tower. The terraced houses in Canning Street to the far left remain with us today. On the other side of the road, King Charles Court, a pleasant modern housing development, occupies the site of the brewery buildings that once stood there. The rest of the site is now taken up with the vast Centurion House.

site of northgate brewery with archaeology

The site of the brewery just after demolition in 1969. Archaeologists have commenced their work. The Liverpool Arms pub on the corner survived and remains with us today as 'The LA'. On the right may be seen the fire station, now converted into a French restaurant. A large and inappropriately-located office block, Centurion House, would soon be built on the site.
