Chester: a Virtual Stroll Around the Walls

Old Maps and Aerial Photographs of Chester

Old Postcard: a watercolour aerial view of Chester, before 1914

This rather wonderful old postcard of a fanciful, but nontheless fairly accurate, aerial view of Chester, was kindly sent to us by a reader in Australia. We liked it so much we put it on our site's front page.

The original painting was by the English artist George Parsons Norman (1840-1914) and it is signed by him in the bottom left-hand corner. He seems to have painted in the Norfolk area a great deal and we are aware of a small number of his watercolours of Chester landmarks but, other than that, know nothing at all about the artist. Should any of our readers be able to tell us more about him, we'd love to hear from you!
