Liverpool Anglican Cathedral from Berry Street / Great George Street / Duke Street corner, 1982

This photograph was taken at a time when all of the old streets in this area - Nile Street and others- and their large Victorian houses had been cleared away, together with the shops and other businesses that fronted Great George Street, including Rushworth's Organ Works, which may be seen in the vibrant scene below, photographed during the 1940s from a few yards further down the street. Many at the time thought there was a plan to create a new green open space here- a fitting setting for the great building- but instead the site today is occupied by a large housing scheme (illustrated below) which largely blocks the view of the Cathedral from this side.
