A Virtual Stroll Along the Mickle Trafford-Shotton Railway

Above we see a couple of derelict control boxes by the side of the old Mickle Trafford railway approaching the point where the line passes under the A56 and then the A55 Link Road.

The embankments on both sides are riddled with rabbit warrens in this area- you can commonly observe their occupants watching you from a safe distance.

The scenery changes radically after leaving the bridges- and the last traces of urban Chester- behind us and on the right we see an example of the splendid Cheshire countryside through which the line passes for much of the remainder of its route.

The trackbed- seen in the foreground- is in very good condition along much of this final stretch and could easily be adapted for the use of cyclists and walkers- and a bridlepath for horse riders would also be a welcome addition.

However, this section of the old line running between the planned Park & Ride site and Mickle Trafford is outside the CDTS remit and it is isolated from the SUSTRANS cycletrack/footpath. What the future of this beautiful and peaceful location will be is therefore currently anyone's guess...

Heavy snow and serious flooding (that water was deep!) under the A56 bridge in 2007
